Gwyllyn Samuel Newton “Glenn” Ford (May 1, 1916 – August 30, 2006) was a Canadian-American actor who specialized in portraying ordinary persons in extraordinary situations. Ford was most well-known during Hollywood’s Golden Age as one of the biggest box-office draws of the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s, with a more than 50-year career.
Although he appeared in a variety of films, some of his most notable parts were in the film noirs Gilda (1946) and The Big Heat (1953), as well as the high school angst drama Blackboard Jungle (1955). However, he won performance awards for comedies and westerns, including three Golden Globe nominations for Best Actor in a Comedy Film, which he won for Pocketful of Miracles (1961).
He also appeared as Clark Kent’s adopted father, Jonathan Kent, in Superman (1978).
The Library of Congress has designated five of his films as “culturally, historically, or aesthetically important” for inclusion in the National Film Registry: Gilda (1946), The Big Heat (1953), Blackboard Jungle (1955), 3:10 to Yuma (1957), and Superman (1978).
