George Glenn Jones (September 12, 1931 – April 26, 2013) was a country music singer and songwriter from the United States.
He rose to international prominence as a result of his long list of hit singles, including his best-known song “He Stopped Loving Her Today,” as well as his distinct voice and phrasing. Jones was widely regarded as the greatest living country singer for the last two decades of his life. “For the two or three minutes consumed by a song, Jones immerses himself so completely in its lyrics, and in the mood it conveys, that the listener can scarcely avoid becoming similarly involved,” writes country music scholar Bill Malone. Jones earned the moniker “The Possum” due to the shape of his nose and facial features.
Jones, who was born in Texas, first heard country music when he was seven years old and was given a guitar when he was nine. His early influences included Roy Acuff and Bill Monroe, but the artistry of Hank Williams and Lefty Frizzell would solidify his vocal style. In 1950, he married Dorothy Bonvillion, and they divorced in 1951. He was discharged from the United States Marine Corps in 1953. In 1954, he married Shirley Ann Corley. Jones recorded “White Lightning,” written by The Big Bopper, in 1959, which launched his singing career.
His second marriage ended in divorce in 1968; a year later, he married fellow country music singer Tammy Wynette. Years of alcoholism compromised his health and led to his missing many performances, earning him the nickname “No Show Jones”. Jones divorced Wynette in 1975, married his fourth wife, Nancy Sepulvado, in 1983, and became sober permanently in 1999. Jones died of hypoxic respiratory failure in 2013 at the age of 81.
