Gaylord Perry was an American professional baseball player who played from September 15, 1938, to December 1, 2022.
He threw right-handed for eight different Major League Baseball clubs between 1962 and 1983. During his 22-year baseball career, Perry had a 3.11 earned run average, 3,534 strikeouts, and 314 victories.
The first pitcher to win the Cy Young Award in both leagues was Perry, a five-time All-Star who won the American League Cy Young Award in 1972 with the Cleveland Indians and the National League Cy Young Award in 1978 with the San Diego Padres. Perry’s Cy Young Award announcement coincided with his 40th birthday, making him the oldest pitcher to win the award in 26 years.
He is also renowned for being a part of the baseball duo with the second-highest winning percentage, behind only the knuckleball-throwing brothers Phil and Joe Niekro.
Despite Perry’s reputation for altering baseballs (such as by throwing spitballs), and perhaps even more so for deceiving batters into thinking he was doing so frequently (he even gave the book version of his autobiography the title Me and the Spitter in 1974), he wasn’t ejected for the unlawful act until August 23, 1982, in the middle of his 21st season in the majors.
