Gaylord Perry was born in Williamston, North Carolina, and was named after his father’s close friend who died while having his teeth extracted. Gaylord Perry was the son of farmers Evan and Ruby Perry.

Evan Perry was a well-known athlete. Gaylord grew up in Williamston and Farmlife, a populated area within the Township of Griffins, a minor division of Martin County, with his older brother Jim Perry and younger sister Carolyn. Gaylord helped his father farm on the family’s land in this area. As children, Jim and Gaylord began playing baseball with their father during their lunch break on the farm, and the three would later play on the same local semi-professional team.

Gaylord went to Williamston High School and participated in football, basketball, and baseball. Before retiring from football, he was All-State as an offensive and defensive end as a sophomore and junior. Gaylord and Jim helped Williamston reach the state finals in Gaylord’s freshman year of basketball. Gaylord averaged nearly 30 points and 20 rebounds per game during his time at Williamston, which finished 94-8. He’d decline dozens of college basketball scholarship offers.
