Gabriel, a Walkinstown native, was originally planning to be a journalist. However, he dabbled in many careers before being an actor – he was an archaeologist, and a cook, and even briefly began training to be a priest. He was a Spanish and history teacher in Ardscoil Éanna when he decided to pursue acting at the age of 29.
After appearing in RTÉ’s The Riordans and its spin-off Bracken, it wasn’t long before Gabriel moved to London, and then on to New York. He currently lives in Rockport, Maine with his wife and daughter, but visits Ireland frequently.

The film centers around Samuel O’Shea, a college literature professor played by Gabriel, who must confront his mortality and make peace with his family after a series of hallucinations lead to his diagnosis of an inoperable brain tumor.
