Janet Grillo is an American filmmaker who was born and raised in New Jersey. She currently works as an Associate Arts Professor at New York University Tisch School of the Arts in the Undergraduate Program at the Kanbar Institute for Film and Television.
She attended Wesleyan University, where she graduated magna cum laude with honors in theatre. She later received an MFA from the Tisch School of the Arts Dramatic Writing Program.
Her career began with her working as an assistant literary manager at Circle Repertory Company. She worked under co-founder Marshall Mason.
She married David O. Russell in 1992 and they later got divorced in 2007. During their marriage, they welcomed a son. Grillo currently lives full-time in New York City.
