Who is David Letterman’s stepdad, Hans Mengering, and is he still alive?
Mr. Mengering, who died nine days before his 90th birthday, worked as a structural engineer for Bohlen, Meyer, and Gibson, an Indianapolis architectural firm founded in 1853 by a German immigrant and where his father also worked. He attended Purdue University after serving in the Army during WWII.
Mr. Mengering’s experiences in Africa, Italy, and France as a member of the 319th Glider Field Artillery Battalion, 82nd Airborne Division left an indelible mark on him.
In June 1944, just hours before D-Day, Mr. Mengering took part in a 40-glider assault outside Ste. Mere Eglise, which contributed to the liberation of France.
Heavy anti-aircraft fire pelted the gliders carrying guns and other supplies, and the majority of them, including Mr. Mengering’s, crashed-landed behind enemy lines.
He was left for dead among the many casualties of the 319th, but he was rescued and awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He spent the rest of his life dealing with the aftereffects of his severe injuries, but that didn’t stop him from living his life to the fullest.
