Guzman was born in Abilene, Texas to Ramón Guzmán Jr., a Mexican immigrant, and Lisa Anne, a Californian with English, German, French, Dutch, and Swedish ancestry, and has a younger brother, Steven. Later, his family relocated to Sacramento, California, where he graduated from West Campus High School in 2005 and attended Sierra College. Guzman began Taekwondo at the age of seven and earned his Black Belt at the age of ten. He also played baseball in high school and college before being forced to retire due to a shoulder injury and unsuccessful surgery.
Guzman was a mixed martial arts fighter until his license expired in 2010, as well as a print and commercial model with Wilhelmina Models and Look Model Agency since the age of 18 when he moved to San Francisco. He modeled for Abercrombie & Fitch and Reebok and appeared in commercials for Old Navy and Gillette, among others. Guzman began auditioning for acting roles and landed the lead role as Sean Asa in Step Up Revolution, the fourth film in the Step Up film series, in 2012, despite having no formal dance training, “my first dance lesson was ‘Step Up Revolution.'”
He went on to say that it was “by chance.” Everyone was probably drunk when they saw me audition. No, it was a lengthy process that included four acting auditions and six dancing auditions. Scott Speer, the director, stated that “there was some kind of magic between me and Kathryn (McCormick) that he wanted to have in the movie.” In 2014, he reprised his role as Sean Asa in the sequel, Step Up: All In, the fifth and final installment of the film series. “The hardest thing is matching my skill level to the professional dancers who’ve been dancing for 25 years,” Guzman said, adding that “acting as I can dance is one thing, but making it believable to the audience is another.”
