The Oneida Nation of Wisconsin’s Charles Allan Hill, a stand-up comedian, and actor, died on December 30, 2013.  He contributed writing to Roseanne, a TV show.

He made world history as the first Native American comedian on television. He was born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1951, and transferred as a young child when his family, who had lived on the Oneida reserve since 1962, went back there.

He graduated from West De Pere High School in 1969 and went on to major in speech and theater at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He took part in Broom Street Theatre Group activities.

He was a part of Hanay Geiogomah’s Native American Theatre Ensemble in the early 1970s. While residing at La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club in Manhattan’s East Village, the ensemble performed Coyote Tracks and Foghorn, among other plays. Additionally, the group made tours of Germany and the US in 1973 and 1974, respectively.
