In Detroit, Michigan, on this day in 1951, Charlie Hill was born. At the age of 11, he relocated to his father’s childhood reservation in the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin.

The Hill family watched comedies together at the end of the week.

Hill was particularly impressed by comedian Dick Gregory, who in a way he had never seen before mixed campaigning for the advancement of Native American social equality with mockery.

Hill was inspired to follow suit. He had a dream for his future and was later chosen to study discourse and display at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Hill relocated to Seattle after graduating from high school and joined the Native American Theater Ensemble there before moving to New York City to join the La Mama Experimental Theater Club. After putting in a few extended periods of training, he traveled to Los Angeles to pursue his dream and find work as an entertainer and jokester.

He was a talented performer who frequently incorporated the harmonica into his presentations, setting him different from his contemporaries. Additionally, he was a voracious reader who spent many hours in the library instructing himself.

He had high expectations for him and spent hours studying various comedians to learn about their techniques, timing, and ways to improve their everyday practice.

Charlie Hill had four children: Dine’ Nizhoni Hill, Nanabah Hill, Nasbah Hill, and Nabahe Hill. Unfortunately, non of his children”s information is available.
