Richmond, Virginia, is where Coleman was born. He was reared by a grandmother on Richmond’s south side after being taken from his abusive parents at the Fairfield Court public housing project (one account claims Creighton Court).
He was a track and field athlete when he was younger, but a leg injury caused him to focus on drama instead. After enrolling in Virginia Commonwealth University on a scholarship for his first year, he left school to join the American Army. From 1985 to 1989, he worked as a video cameraman while he was in the service.
