Russian opposition leader, Alexei Navalny, has been sentenced to nine years in a maximum-security prison for fraud. This is in addition to a two-and-a-half-year prior sentence he’s already serving.
Who is Alexei Navalny and why was he sentenced?
Navalny is a Russian opposition leader as well as a lawyer and anti-corruption activist.
Not only has he organized anti-government demonstrations, but he has also run for office to advocate for reforms against corruption in Russia, President Putin, and his government.
The reasons for his sentence were linked to fraud and embezzlement, however, his supporters claim that it’s politically motivated.
Who are Alexei Navalny’s wife and children?
He is married to Yulia Navalnaya who is a Russian public figure and economist.
She is a graduate of the Faculty of International Economic Relations of the Plekhanov Russian Economic Academy. She later went on to complete an internship abroad and then graduate school. She also worked for a while in one of Moscow’s banks.
She has two children with Navalny.
His daughter, Daria was born in 2001. She is currently an undergraduate student at Stanford University.
