Robert Leroy Johnson born May 8, 1911, was a blues musician and songwriter from the United States. His seminal records from 1936 and 1937 showcase a unique blend of singing, guitar talents, and songwriting talent that impacted subsequent generations of performers.
Despite the fact that his recorded career lasted only seven months, he is now regarded as a master of the blues, particularly the Delta blues style, as well as one of the twentieth century’s most important performers.
Johnson died of unexplained circumstances on August 16, 1938, near Greenwood, Mississippi, at the age of 27. Johnson’s death was not made public. Gayle Dean Wardlow, a Mississippi-based musicologist investigating Johnson’s biography, discovered Johnson’s death certificate almost 30 years later, which indicated simply the date and location, with no official cause of death.
There had been no formal autopsy. Instead, a formal examination was performed in order to file the death certificate, and no instant cause of death was found.
He most certainly had congenital syphilis, and medical authorities later suspected that this may have contributed to his death. However, 30 years of local oral tradition had developed a tale that, like the rest of his life narrative, had filled in holes in the little historical evidence.
