Overweight for many years, Sosa had begun suffering serious health problems. She was admitted to the hospital two weeks ago suffering from liver problems. Progressive kidney failure and cardiac arrest followed.
Suffering from recurrent endocrine and respiratory problems in later years, the 74-year-old Sosa was hospitalized in Buenos Aires on 18 September 2009. She died from multiple organ failure on 4 October 2009, at 5:15 am.
Over the years of her career, Mercedes Sosa gained a huge fan base and massive wealth to go with her career. She had a net worth estimated at 10 million USD which she solely earned from her career.
Sosa and her first husband, Manuel Oscar Matus, with whom she had one son, were key players in the mid-60s Nueva canción movement (which was called nuevo cancionero in Argentina).
Mercedes Sosa is survived by one son, Fabián Matus, and it’s natural that he inherited his mother’ estate and money.
