Anis Lyn Joplin was born in Port Arthur, Texas, on January 19, 1943. Her father was an engineer for Texaco, while her mother was a registrar for a business college. Her two younger siblings were brought up as Church of Christ believers.

She briefly attended Lamar State University in Beaumont, Texas, after graduation, but in 1962 she went to the University of Texas at Austin.

She played live with the Waller Creek Boys, a folk group while she was a student at Austin.

In 1962, while still a college student, Joplin cut her first song, “What Good Can Drinkin’ Do?” She left Texas early the following year and traveled by hitchhiking with her buddy Chet Helm in the direction of San Francisco. She would ultimately fail to complete her degree.

Who inherited Janis Joplin’s money and estate?

Janis stipulated in her will that a quarter of her wealth should go to each of her two surviving siblings, Laura and Michael, and that half should go to her parents. After her parents passed away, Laura and Michael divided responsibility equally.

The estate is currently managed by Laura and Michael through a holding company named Jam Inc.

Over the years, the siblings have made millions in royalties and licensing fees, far more than Janis did in her whole life.

One instance is the thirty years Michael and Laura maintained Janis’ fabled Porsche.

Later, in 2015, they put the automobile up for auction after having at some point restored the colorful paint job. The highest bidder offered $1.
