Tyler Gregory Okonma was born in Hawthorne, California, on March 6, 1991, to a Nigerian father of Igbo ancestry and an American mother of mixed African-American and white Canadian ancestry. He never met his father and spent his childhood in Hawthorne before moving to Ladera Heights at the age of 17.

Before he could even make music, he would take the cover of a CD case and create covers for his own imaginary albums, complete with a tracklist and song lengths. He taught himself to play the piano when he was 14 years old.

He attended 12 different schools in the Los Angeles and Sacramento areas during his 12 years of education. Okonma joined the drama class in eighth grade and was kicked out because he was too hyper, and he was not allowed to join the band class in ninth grade because he couldn’t read music.

He spent less than two weeks at FedEx and more than two years at Starbucks. Okonma derived his stage name from a Myspace page where he shared his creative endeavors.

Okonma co-founded the alternative hip-hop collective Odd Future in 2007 with Hodgy, Left Brain, and Casey Veggies. They self-released their debut mixtape, The Odd Future Tape, in November 2008. Bastard, Okonma’s first solo mixtape, was released on December 25, 2009. The mixtape was eventually ranked 32nd on Pitchfork Media’s list of the Top Albums of 2010.

Okonma debuted the music video for “Yonkers” on February 11, 2011. Several online media outlets covered the video. An extended version with a third verse is now available on iTunes. Okonma was named Best New Artist for “Yonkers” at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards. Okonma’s thematic content in his first two solo projects led fans and publications alike to label him as part of the horrorcore scene, despite his vehement denial.

Tyler the Creator’s girlfriend is Reign Judge, an IMG model who has recently appeared in campaigns for Miu Miu, Batsheva, Gucci, and Tyler’s own GOLF LE FLEUR*.

Judge is ten years his junior — Tyler is 31, Judge is 21 — but they’ve been dating since 2021, making their first public appearance together on the red carpet gala at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in December of that year.
