Eddard “Ned” Stark is a fictional character in both George R. R. Martin’s 1996 fantasy novel A Game of Thrones and HBO’s Game of Thrones, which is based on Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series. Ned is portrayed as the ruler of Winterfell, a fabled castle that may be found in the north of the imaginary continent of Westeros.
Despite Ned being established as the major character in both the novel and the first season of the TV adaptation, readers of the book and viewers of the TV series were both surprised by a narrative twist involving Ned at the end of the book and the first season.
Game of Thrones’ Ned was portrayed by Sean Bean in the first season, by Sebastian Croft as a small kid in the sixth season, and by Robert Aramayo as a young adult in the sixth and seventh seasons. For the role, Bean was nominated for both the Saturn Award for Best Actor in Television and the Scream Award for Best Fantasy Actor. He and the rest of the cast received 2011 Screen Actors Guild Award nominations for Outstanding Ensemble in a Drama Series.
