A politician and teacher from Sri Lanka, Reginald Cooray lived from 12 November 1947 to 13 January 2023. He served as the Northern Province’s governor as well as the province chief minister and a government minister.
In April 2018, he served as governor of the Central Province for a brief period of time. His governorship was the shortest in Sri Lankan history, lasting less than 24 hours.
He was a rich landowner and a Roman Catholic. In July 2011, Cooray lost his wife. Muditha Sanjeewani, his daughter, passed away in December 2013.
Cooray was a certified English teacher. In Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna, he began his political career. He ran as an independent in Beruwala for the 1977 parliamentary election but was not successful in winning.
He eventually became a member of the Sri Lanka People’s Party under Vijaya Kumaratunga (SLPP).
