His re-election in 2007 provoked months of countrywide rioting, resulting in 1,200 deaths.
He had a long career in finance and economic planning before becoming Minister of Finance and Economic Planning in 1970.
He returned to Kenya in 1960 and served as the executive officer of KANU, Kenya’s biggest political party at the time.
Kibaki was praised for his liberal reforms, which helped to resuscitate Kenya’s ailing economy, but he was also accused of failing to do enough to combat widespread corruption

The deceased former president’s burial ground is yet to be determined.
