Jeff Shuter, the motion comics director, and producer behind projects for Viacom and MTV died on November 10 in Chicago after suffering a traumatic brain injury.
His credits include motion comics for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Stan Lee’s Time Jumper, and an adaptation of Invincible based on the comic book series.
Shuter was born in Wisconsin. He attended Northwestern University’s Performance Studies Program in Evanston, Illinois.
His main concentration was on adapting literature to different mediums through ethnographic study and methodologies. He created and adapted various graphic novel motion comic series, including Invincible by Robert Kirkman and Time Jumper by Stan Lee.
These programs were pivotal in establishing the contemporary motion comic animation genre.
Shuter graduated from Northwestern University in 2003 and relocated to Los Angeles, where he co-founded Gain Enterprises, through which he and co-founder Dan Viney assisted in the development of motion comics technology at a time when smartphones were becoming more common and studios began developing content for mobile devices.
