Homer Jones, a legendary wide receiver with the New York Giants who is credited with being the first to spike a football following a score, has passed away. He was 82.
The Giants verified the passing, claiming that Jones’ daughter, Lacarroll Jones Nickelberry, told KLTV in Pittsburg, Texas, where Jones was born and raised, that he had passed away. His daughter confirmed that Dad passed away on Wednesday after a fight with lung cancer.
Jones’s career was limited, lasting just seven seasons, the latter of which he spent mostly with the Cleveland Browns as a kick returner. But from 1965 through 1969, although playing for average or worse Giant teams, he was one of the most feared pass catchers in the National Football League.
