George Cohen, the right-back on England’s World Cup-winning squad in 1966, passed away on Friday at the age of 83, his former club Fulham said.
The 37-cap defender played every minute of England’s successful home campaign that ended with a 4-2 victory over West Germany in extra time to win their first—and so far only—World Cup.
Cohen made 459 appearances for Fulham between 1956 and 1969, but his career was cut short at age 29 due to a knee injury. Cohen played for the Cottagers throughout his entire career. Later, he worked for the club’s catering departments.
In recognition of Cohen’s dedication to Fulham, a statue in his honor was installed at Craven Cottage in October 2016. Only Bobby Charlton and hat-trick hero Geoff Hurst remain from the winning England XI from the 1966 World Cup final due to the lack of substitutes.
