George Frederick Lindop MBE, a British rugby league referee, died in January 2023. He was born on July 20, 1938. He officiated 22 tests, including the 1970 World Cup Final. He officiated five Challenge Cup Finals in addition.

For his contributions to rugby league, Lindop received the MBE in 1989. In 2009, he was included in the Rugby Football League’s Roll of Honor.

In 1969, Lindop founded and served as coach of the University of Sheffield rugby league team. At the Eastmoor club in Wakefield and the Oulton Raiders club close to Leeds, he served as a youth rugby league coach.

At 84 years old, his passing was confirmed on January 23, 2023.

During his 21-year top-level career, Lindop officiated several important games, including four Challenge Cup Finals at Wembley, including the infamous drawn Final of 1982, in which he also presided over the rematch at Elland Road.

David Oxley CBE, the RFL Chief Executive, who has also been mourned and honored over the past 24 hours following his passing at the weekend, appointed him to a new position as Controller of Referees after he retired following the 1988 Cup Final between Wigan and Halifax.
