Kwasi Kwarteng (born 26 May 1975 as Akwasi Addo Alfred Kwarteng) is a British politician who has served as Chancellor of the Exchequer since 2022. From 2021 to 2022, he was Secretary of State for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy.

He is a Conservative Party member who has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Spelthorne in northern Surrey since 2010.

Kwarteng was born in the London Borough of Waltham Forest in 1975, the only child of Alfred K. Kwarteng and Charlotte Boaitey-Kwarteng, who moved from Ghana in the 1960s as students.

Following the retirement of Suella Braverman, Kwarteng was named Under-Secretary of State at the Department for Exiting the European Union on November 16, 2018. Following Boris Johnson’s election as Prime Minister in July 2019, Kwarteng was appointed to Minister of State for Business, Energy, and Clean Growth, with the responsibility of attending Cabinet.
