John N. Mitchell, who served as attorney general of the United States under President Richard Nixon, was married to Martha Mitchell (September 2, 1918 – May 31, 1976). She was honest and revealing in her public remarks and interviews throughout the Watergate crisis.

Mitchell, a Presbyterian, regularly visited Marble Collegiate Church in New York.

She started writing her memoirs in 1973, but she never signed a contract out of concern that it would mean she would not receive any money from her husband. She landed a brief gig as the program’s guest host on Washington’s WTTG in April 1974, but it only lasted a week.

One daughter, Marty, was born to Martha and John N. Mitchell, the first and only attorney general of the United States to serve time in prison. (Martha’s first marriage to Clyde Jennings produced an elder son named Clyde Jay Jenning.)

In 1973, the same year the United States Senate Watergate Committee was established, Martha and Mitchell made their separation public. Soon after her breakup with Mitchell, Martha relocated outside of Washington, D.C. After they broke up, Marty vanished from public view.
