La India, whose true name is Linda Viera Caballero, is a Puerto Rican singer and songwriter who specializes in Latin pop, salsa, and house music. She was born on March 9, 1969.

The album Intensamente La India Con Canciones De Juan Gabriel won the Latin Grammy Award for Best Salsa Album while La India was nominated for both the Grammy and Latin Grammy Awards.

Unbeknownst to many, Caballero joined the Latin freestyle troupe TKA in 1985 at the age of 16. She was given the name “Linda” and appeared in the group photo on the back cover of TKA’s second song, “Come Get My Love.” Soon after that, she left.

Where is La India from?

La India was born in Ro Piedras, Puerto Rico. Both of her parents immigrated to New York City not long after she was born, settling in the South Bronx district. They initially lived with Caballero’s grandmother, who had a big influence on his life.

When she was a little child, Caballero began singing, and she even briefly studied opera. Because of her dark appearance and long, straight black hair, her grandma gave her the stage name La India.

La India considers herself to be a feminist since she witnessed her mother being mistreated by her father when she was hiding under the bed.
