On January 10, 1992, Atsu was born in Ada Foah, in the Greater Accra Region. At the West African Football Academy, originally the Feyenoord Football School, in Sogakope, Volta Region, Ghana, he completed a portion of his education.

The academy was once situated at Gomoa Fetteh, a city in the Central Region. Following that, Atsu moved to Kasoa to play for Cheetah FC.

Atsu began his professional career with Porto after a year-long loan with Rio Ave. Chelsea leased him to Vitesse Arnhem, Everton, AFC Bournemouth, and Málaga after purchasing him in 2013 for £3.5 million.

After completing the entire 2016–17 season on loan at Newcastle United, he agreed to a permanent contract with them in May of that year. He played for Hatayspor in Turkey as his four-year deal with Al Raed in Saudi Arabia came to an end. At the age of 31, Atsu perished in the Turkey-Syria earthquake of 2023.

Between 2012 and 2019, Atsu took part in 65 full international matches for Ghana, making four appearances at the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations. After assisting the squad in finishing second at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, Atsu was named Player of the Tournament and Scorer of the Tournament.
