African music was first made popular to a global audience by Youssou N’Dour, a pioneering Senegalese singer, composer, bandleader, and producer. Youssou, one of the finest singers in history and “West Africa’s cultural ambassador to the world,” was named UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in 1991.

Harry Belafonte and Youssou both gave performances at the first symposium of African artists and intellectuals for child survival and development in 1987, which was put on by UNICEF.

He took part in two sizable concerts during the group’s second symposium in Zimbabwe the following year, which benefited kids caught up in armed conflict.

Youssou supported children both domestically and internationally as a Goodwill Ambassador by giving several performances for charity and taking part in campaigns for social mobilization and advocacy.

Dakar is the place of Youssou’s birth. When he was twelve years old, he gave his first performance. By the time he was in his mid-teens, he was singing frequently with the Star Band, the most popular group in Senegal at the time. Youssou established his own band, Étoile de Dakar, in 1979. In 1981, it evolved into Super Étoile de Dakar.
