Mellor went to the Bredbury Green Primary School and later went to Werneth School, Greater Manchester.
Mellor rose to prominence in 1990 as Ben Rowlingson in the children’s television show Children’s Ward. He joined the cast of Hollyoaks in 1995 and portrayed James “Jambo” Bolton until 1998.
He appeared as Jambo in a Christmas episode of Hollyoaks. He recorded a rendition of Leo Sayer’s “When I Need You,” which peaked at number 5, and a follow-up song named “No Matter What I Do,” which peaked at number 23.
He also appeared in the music video for Boyzone’s Comic Relief track “When The Going Gets Tough.”
