Native American (Cherokee Nation) actor and producer Wesley Studi was born on December 17, 1947. He has received praise from critics and accolades throughout his career, particularly for the way he has portrayed Native Americans in movies.

He has acted in movies that have won Academy Awards, like Dances with Wolves (1990) and The Last of the Mohicans (1992), as well as those that have been nominated (2005). He is also well-known for his role as Sagat in Street Fighter (1994).

He has also appeared in the films Hostiles, Heat, Mystery Men, Avatar, A Million Ways to Die in the West, and Penny Dreadful. In 2019, he was recognized with an Academy Honorary Award,[3] making him the first Native American and the second Indigenous person from North America to be so honored (the first was Buffy Sainte-Marie).

In December 2020, The New York Times listed him #19 on their list of the “25 Greatest Actors of the Twenty-First Century (So Far),” stating that “Wes Studi has one of the screen’s most arresting features — jutting and wrinkled and anchored with the kind of intense eyes that require you meet their look.

Lesser directors want to use his visage as a brutal emblem of Native American experience, as a mask of dignity, anguish, and pain that is only unknown because no one has asked the man who wears it. Studi, on the other hand, peels the layers of a character’s exterior in the right film. He is a master of expressive opacity, revealing the mask and what lies beyond, both thinking and emotion.”
