McBride was born and raised in Fort Morgan, Colorado, where he also attended Fort Morgan High School and participated in football, basketball, and baseball. He was named Class 3A All-Colorado during his junior season, which included 32 catches for 751 yards and 11 touchdowns. As a senior, he was once again named to the All-Colorado team after rushing for 226 yards, receiving 30 passes for 450 yards, and scoring four touchdowns in all. He also had 40 defensive tackles and one sack. In addition to holding the school records for lifetime home runs and RBIs in baseball, McBride also retains the marks for career points scored in basketball.
ESPN gave Mullen a good grade for his class. Mullen had scholarship offers from numerous institutions, including LSU, Florida State, and Alabama. On national signing day, Mullen decided to enroll at Clemson. Mullen played infrequently for Clemson during his first season there. He made 15 stops and one pass breakup. Mullen had a substantial increase in playing time during his sophomore year, appearing in all 13 games and starting 12, compiling 42 tackles, three interceptions, and seven pass breakups in 668 snaps. Mullen was chosen as an Honorable Mention All-ACC pick following the season. [Reference needed] Mullen declared for the 2019 NFL Draft after the 2018 season, saying he will forgo his senior year.
