In the 2014 NFL Draft, he was selected by the Buffalo Bills as the fourth overall pick after playing college football for Clemson. Additionally, he has represented the Baltimore Ravens, Kansas City Chiefs, and Los Angeles Rams. Watkins won the Super Bowl while playing for the Chiefs.
Watkins was a letterman in football, basketball, and track, and field at South Fort Myers High School in Fort Myers, Florida. During his career, he became Lee County’s all-time leading receiver, with 133 catches for 2,997 yards and 36 touchdowns. He had 33 receptions for 537 yards and 10 touchdowns as a sophomore. He was a first-team all-state selection in his junior and senior years. He had 46 catches for 1,192 yards and 14 touchdowns as a junior. Watkins had eight 100-yard receiving games as a senior, finishing with 54 catches for 1,268 yards and 12 touchdowns.
He led an undefeated South Fort Myers team to the 3A state semi-finals, where they were defeated 44-28 by a Miami Norland team led by Duke Johnson. He took part in the 2011 US Army All-American Bowl.
In addition to football, Watkins competed in track and field for the Wolfpack, where he was one of the top sprinters in the state. At the state meet as a junior, he finished fifth in the 100 meters and sixth in the 200 meters. He won the AA state title in the 200 meters as a senior, with a time of 21.11 seconds. He also won the 100 meters at the 2011 Tarpon Invitational in 10.45 seconds, a personal best.
