Samuel Henry John Worthington was born in Godalming, Surrey, England on August 2, 1976. He was born in England, but when he was six months old, his family relocated to Perth, Western Australia.

Worthington’s breakthrough break that finally pushed him into enormous international prominence came in 2009 when he starred in James Cameron’s sci-fi epic picture “Avatar”.

“Avatar” went on to become the highest-grossing film of all time, grossing over $2.73 billion worldwide ($3.3 billion after inflation). It held the record for the highest-grossing film for a decade until “Avengers: Endgame” surpassed it in 2019.

Prior to winning his breakout role in “Avatar,” Worthington had sold most of his belongings for roughly $2,000 and was living in his car.

Worthington studied at Western Australia’s John Curtin College of the Arts in Fremantle. It focuses on the performing arts. He took acting classes there but never graduated.

He moved to Sydney after graduating from school and worked odd jobs, including construction. When he obtained a scholarship at the National Institute of Dramatic Art, he was working as a bricklayer in Sydney (NIDA).
