Richard Schiff, the middle child of three sons, was born in Bethesda, Maryland. His father, Edward, was a real estate lawyer, and his mother, Charlotte, worked in cable TV and publishing executive roles. When Schiff was 12 years old, his parents got a divorce.

In 1973, Schiffattempted to enroll at City College of New York (CCNY), but he was uninterested in the coursework. After deciding not to bother showing up for his final exams, he traveled to Colorado, where he worked as a hippie and cut wood for a living.
