Authorities said that a small plane crash-landed and turned over on a beach in Santa Monica, California, killing the community’s previous mayor.
At about three o’clock on Thursday, the single-engine Cessna took off from Santa Monica Airport on its way to Malibu. Rex Minter was a passenger. A medical facility received the pilot.
The passing of Minter was independently confirmed by the City of Santa Monica and the current mayor, Gleam Davis.
The pilot reportedly reported engine issues and attempted to land at the airport before deciding to make an emergency landing, according to a flight recording, KCBS-TV said.
Air traffic control informs the pilot in a clip released on KTTV-TV that “landing on the beach will be at your own risk.”
The plane could be seen on video descending for a beach landing before it impacted the sea at the shore and overturned to the south of the Santa Monica Pier.
Two passengers were taken from the aircraft by firefighters, one of whom was reportedly in cardiac arrest.
According to a statement on the municipal website, Minter was elected to the Santa Monica City Council in 1955, served as mayor from 1963 to 1967, and later worked as the city attorney for Arcadia and a judge on the Los Angeles County Superior Court.
