Higgins went to Mesquite High School in Mesquite, Texas, and was a three-sport athlete, competing in football, basketball, and track. He was a wide receiver for the Mesquite High School football team. He had 69 receptions for 1,136 yards and 10 touchdowns as a senior. Rivals.com rated Higgins as a two-star recruit. He started for the Mesquite basketball team and averaged 17 points per game. In track and field at Mesquite, he was also outstanding. He placed seventh in the long jump at the 2013 District Meet with a leap of 6.68 meters, and fourth in the 200-meter dash in a time of 22.76 seconds. In the 400-meter dash at the 2012 Rockin R Relays, he finished fifth with a personal-best time of 53.48 seconds.
