At the conclusion of his junior year, Werner chose Notre Dame over offers from Duke, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Northwestern, Ohio State, Penn State, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt, and Wisconsin to play collegiate football.
He had 64 tackles as a senior, eight sacks, and 17 tackles for loss, and was selected Class 6A All-State. Werner reopened his recruitment after breaking his commitment to Notre Dame during the current campaign and decided to enroll at Ohio State.
