Penei Sewell is an American football player who plays as an offensive tackle for the Detroit Lions. Sewell was born on October 9, 2000, in Malaeimi, an American Samoan town located close to Pago Pago, the territory’s capital.
Because of the widespread COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Sewell decided not to play his junior year for the Lions and instead entered the NFL draft the following year, when he was selected seventh overall by the team. Penei Sewell was a college football player for the Oregon Ducks, and in 2019, he won both the Outland Trophy and the Morris Trophy for his team. Despite suffering a severe ankle sprain during his freshman season with the Ducks in 2018, Sewell was thrust into the starting lineup almost immediately and started seven of the team’s games.
When Sewell competed again in 2019, he was victorious in both the Morris Trophy and the Outland Trophy. In addition to this, he and Tua Tagovailoa, a former quarterback for the Alabama Crimson Tide, were also named as joint recipients of the 2019 Polynesian College Football Player of the Year award.
