Francis Edward Paxton Whitehead was an English actor, theatre director, and playwright who lived from 17 October 1937 until 16 June 2023. He was nominated for a Drama Desk Award and a Tony Award for his portrayal of Pellinore in the 1980 Camelot revival.

His Broadway roles were many. He was well known for his film roles as well as his numerous guest appearances on numerous US television programs, particularly those on major sitcoms from the 1990s like Frasier, Caroline in the City, Ellen, 3rd Rock from the Sun, The Drew Carey Show, Mad About You, and Friends.

At the age of 17, he began his training at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in London.

Whitehead acted in tiny travelling repertory companies that each week prepared and staged a different piece.

He obtained a contract with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1958. After participating in Canadian theatre and television shows, he made his Broadway debut in The Affair in 1962.
