As a three-star recruit for Rutgers’ 2017 class in 2016, Fatukasi made a commitment to play there. He participated in all twelve of Rutgers’ games during his freshman season. He played in eleven games in 2018 and recorded twenty tackles across his linebacker and special teams roles.
He participated in each of Rutgers’ twelve games in 2019, starting ten of them at weak-side linebacker. Fatukasi was appointed team captain for Greg Schiano’s first competitive season in 2020. All nine of his games saw him start, and he led the Big Ten in tackles. He received the Big Ten Co-Defensive Player of the Week honor once during the course of the season.
He was selected as one of the Butkus Award semifinalists, and the coaches and media both named him to the first team of the Big Ten. Because of the NCAA’s covid exemption, he returned to Rutgers for the 2021 season.
For the 2021 season, it was revealed that he would move from outside to inside linebacker. Despite missing a number of games due to injury, he was named to the third team of the Big Ten at the end of the 2021 season.
