Lyonne was born by Ivette Buchinger and Aaron Braunstein in New York City. Lyonne was signed by the Ford Modeling Agency as a child. She was cast as Opal on Pee-Playhouse wee’s when she was six years old, and she went on to appear in films such as Heartburn, A Man Called Sarge, and Dennis the Menace.
Lyonne has said of her experiences as a young child actor: “My parents were not the best. They are not bad people in my opinion. Even if they were ready to have children, putting your child in business at the age of six seems like a crazy idea.”

Lyonne stated she was a scholarship student who took honors Talmud classes and studied Aramaic at the Ramaz School, a private Jewish school. She was dismissed from school for selling marijuana there. Lyonne was an outcast growing up on the Upper East Side, where she now resides.
Lyonne attended Miami Country Day School after her mother relocated the family there. She dropped out of high school before her senior year to enroll in a film program at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, so she never received a diploma.
