Michael C. Lerner, an American actor, was born on June 22, 1941. Lerner was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York City, to a Romanian-Jewish family. Michael’s parents are George and Blanche Lerner. Lerner’s younger brother Ken, nephew Sam, and niece Jenny are all performers, and he himself comes from a long line of them.
Lerner made his first appearance on television at the age of 13 as a “quiz kid” on a program hosted by a nearby sportscaster. Alongside Joel Zwick, he played Willy Loman in a Brooklyn College production of Death of a Salesman. The encounter convinced him to pursue acting instead of a career as an English professor.
Before making his acting debut in Alex in Wonderland in 1970, Lerner’s performance in Paul Mazursky’s production of Little Murders was lauded by the director of the movie. After that, he proceeded to appear in Hollywood films, such as The Candidate, St. Ives, and the 1981 version of The Postman Always Rings Twice.
Lerner was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1991 after co-starring in Harlem Nights and appearing as Jack Lipnick in Barton Fink. He based the persona in part on the late film business tycoon Louis B. Mayer.
