Mayra Flores, a Republican, made history Tuesday night by winning a special election in a South Texas congressional district, upsetting a long-held Democratic bastion and becoming the country’s first congresswoman born in Mexico.

She will serve the balance of the term of U.S. Rep. Filemon Vela, which expires in January. Vela, a Democrat from Brownsville, resigned from his position in March to work for a lobbying business.

She graduated high school in San Benito.

She had most of her education in America.

Where did Mayra Flores go to college?

Her college is not documented

Flores was the head of Hispanic Outreach for the Hidalgo County Republican Party prior to her congressional bids.

She was reared with conservative ideals, and despite her parents’ Democratic Party support, she was driven to the Republicans because of her anti-abortion convictions.

What are Mayra Flores’ academic qualifications?

Texas State Technical College, Harlingen (AA) South Texas College (BS) have all given her certificates.

Flores launched her candidacy for the United States House of Representatives in Texas’ 34th congressional district after incumbent Democratic representative Filemon Vela Jr. announced in March 2021 that he would not seek re-election to the seat in 2022.

She conducted her campaign by appealing to Hispanic and Latino Americans’ dissatisfaction with the Democratic Party, which they have traditionally backed in South Texas. Following the creation of new congressional districts as part of the 2020 redistricting cycle, incumbent Democrat Vicente Gonzalez of the 15th congressional district announced his candidacy for the new 34th congressional district.

Flores and Gonzalez won their respective political primary on March 1, 2022, and will face each other in the general election on November 8, 2022.
