Leighton Vander Esch, a linebacker with the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League, was born on February 8, 1996. He attended Boise State before being taken in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft by the Cowboys.

Vander Esch was born in Riggins, Idaho, and reared there. He is of Dutch ancestry. He attended Salmon River High School in Riggins and participated in basketball, track, and eight-man football. In 2014, he graduated with eleven other students.

Vander Esch was a football quarterback and middle linebacker. He completed 121 of 199 passes (60.8 percent) as a senior, totaling 2,155 yards and 28 passing touchdowns while throwing just one interception.

In the state’s 53-38 victory over Lighthouse Christian School, he generated more than 500 yards of total offense and scored all five of his team’s offensive touchdowns. After leading SRHS to a 1A D2 state victory, he was named All-Idaho 1A Division II Player of the Year.
