Hankins was born in the Michigan town of Dearborn Heights. In his freshman year of high school football, he started as a 255-pound offensive guard. He transferred to Southeastern High School for his sophomore year, where he started on the defensive line. In 2008, five-star prospect William Gholston transferred to Southeastern, resulting in the “best defense in Detroit,” with Hankins shutting down the inside and Gholston patrolling the edge.

Hankins was ranked as the No. 20 prospect from Michigan in the 2010 class by Rivals.com, which gave him a three-star rating as a recruit. He wanted to go to Michigan State with Gholston, but the Spartans made him no offers. Over offers from Alabama, Florida, Michigan, Oklahoma, and Wisconsin, Hankins ultimately chose Ohio State.
