Jason’s mother reared him in Norwalk, Iowa. Following graduation, he relocated to Hawaii.

Momoa, an only child, was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, on August 1, 1979, to photographer Coni (Lemke) and painter Joseph Momoa. His mother is of German, Irish, and Pawnee descent, while his father is a Native Hawaiian.

Prior to starring as Ronon Dex in the Syfy science fiction series Stargate Atlantis (2005–2009) and Khal Drogo in the first two seasons of the HBO fantasy drama series Game of Thrones (2011–2012), he made his acting debut as Jason Ioane on the syndicated action drama series Baywatch: Hawaii (1999–2001).

He went on to play the lead roles in the historical drama series Frontier (2016–2018) on Discovery Channel and the science fiction series See (2019–2022) on Apple TV+.

Momoa, Jonathan Hirschbein, and Robert Homer Mollohan co-wrote and directed the 2014 American drama thriller Road to Paloma. The cast of the movie includes Momoa, Sarah Shahi, Lisa Bonet, Michael Raymond-James, and Wes Studi.

It debuted at the Sarasota Film Festival in April of 2014. In addition to a VOD release, the film had a limited theatrical run on July 15, 2014, in New York City and Los Angeles.
