Mitchell played in 13 games as a freshman, largely on special teams. He was elevated to the starting lineup as a sophomore and hauled in 21 catches for 361 yards and two touchdowns. Mitchell has 26 receptions for 435 yards and four touchdowns during his junior season. Mitchell made the decision to stay at Virginia Tech for his final year rather than enter the 2021 NFL Draft. Mitchell suffered an injury in the second game of his senior year that would cause his season to stop.
