He began his amateur football career at Mountain View High School in the city of Lawrenceville. He was named by a number of scouting and recruitment networks as one of the best prospects in the state of Georgia from his graduating class.
Jalen received scholarship and admission offers from a couple of universities in the United States. He decided to commit the Appalachian State University. Although he sat out his true freshman year, he remained with the Appalachian State Mountaineers for six seasons.
In his last season, he returned 26 kickoffs for a school-record 781 yards and two touchdowns while catching 15 passes for 226 yards and one touchdown.
