Alexander went to high school in Mint Hill, North Carolina, at Rocky River High School. He played high school football for the Ravens while he was there.

He had promised to play college football for the University of South Carolina, but he changed his mind and now plans to play for the University of Louisville.

Alexander played for Bobby Petrino at Louisville from 2015 to 2017. He had 77 tackles and seven interceptions over the course of his career. He was named Second-team All-ACC for the 2016 season.

In 2017, after his junior season, he chose to skip his senior year and go straight into the draft.

Because he kept getting hurt during the season, he decided not to play in the 2017 TaxSlayer Bowl with the rest of the Louisville team.
