Greg Norman was born to Mervin and Toini Norman in Mount Isa, Queensland, Australia on February 10, 1955. He played rugby and cricket as a kid and wanted to be a pro surfer.

When Norman was 15 years old, his mother Toini, who had a single-figure handicap, taught him how to play golf.

Norman, then 20 years old, worked as Billy McWilliam OAM’s assistant professional at Sydney, New South Wales’ Beverley Park Golf Club in 1975.

Six years after he started playing golf, in 1976, Norman became a tournament player who played professionally.

He began competing on the European Tour in 1977, and that same year, he won his first European tournament.
